Visual interference disrupts visual knowledge
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that visual interference impairs people’s ability to make use of visual knowledge. These results provide strong evidence that making use of stored visual knowledge—longterm memory of what things look like—depends on perceptual mechanisms. In the first set of studies, we show that presenting visual noise patterns during or after hearing a verbal cue greatly reduces the effectiveness of the cue on a simple visual discrimination task. In the second experiment, participants were tasked with answering questions about visual features of familiar objects, e.g., verifying that tables have flat surfaces. Accuracy in answering visual, but not encyclopedic questions was reduced when viewing colorful noise patterns. This result is most parsimoniously explained by positing that judgments required activation of visual representations that were being interfered with when viewing irrelevant patterns. Although much of our conceptual knowledge may abstract away from perceptual details, knowledge of what things look like appears to be represented in a visual

Verbal and Visual Proactive Interference in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Objective: Working memory executive deficits have a role in maintaining Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms including flashbacks and reexperiencing. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to compare the visual and verbal Proactive Interference in trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD. Method: In this retrospective study, we recruited subjects through the purposiv...
متن کاملMicrostimulation of V1 input layers disrupts the selection and detection of visual targets by monkeys.
Electrical microstimulation delivered to primary visual cortex (V1) concurrently with the presentation of visual targets interferes with the selection of these targets. To determine the source of this interference, we stimulated the visual input layers of V1 as rhesus monkeys generated saccadic eye movements to visual targets presented at and outside the receptive field of the stimulated neuron...
متن کاملNonverbal Semantic Processing Disrupts Visual Word Recognition in Healthy Adults
Two experiments examined the effect of semantic interference on visual lexical decision (vLD) in normal skilled readers. Experiment 1 employed a dual-task paradigm to test whether nonverbal semantic processing disrupts visual word recognition when the orthographic structure of words and non-words is controlled. Experiment 2 employed the same paradigm to test whether participants strategically s...
متن کاملThe Effect of Using Visual Aids, Semantic Elaboration, and Visual Aids plus Semantic Elaboration on Iranian Learners' Vocabulary Learning
This study investigated the effect of using visual aids, semantic elaboration, and visual aids plus semantic elaboration on the Iranian EFL learners' vocabulary learning. To conduct the study, the researchers assigned 49 elementary learners to three homogeneous groups according to their proficiency level. Then, a pre-test of Paribakht and Wesche's Vocabulary Knowledge Scale was given to each gr...
متن کاملActivation of conflicting responses in Parkinson's disease: evidence for degrading and facilitating effects on response time.
Response selection often occurs in a context of competition among conflicting responses. According to recent models, the basal ganglia may play an integral role in resolving this competition by focusing the selection and inhibition of responses. We hypothesized that basal ganglia dysfunction produced by Parkinson's disease (PD) disrupts selection among conflicting responses. Using a version of ...
